2014 G.B. Burlotto Pelaverga, Piedmonte Italy
This ancient Piedmonte grape variety is seldom seen outside of its village of origin, Verduno, but is quite excellent. In fact, up until about 20 years ago, Pelaverga was in danger of becoming extinct, but the Burlotto family have championed the grape and produce this reference point example.
The wine smells like the Pidemonte: floral, fruit-driven and deep. Strawberry, spice, earth and fresh herbs dance across the palate along a wine of supple texture. The tannins are fine and the acidity is fresh. This is a beautiful Italian red that you should definitely try! Drink now through 2023.
